Another Way to Mother: Celebrating the Love that Cares.
Mother's Day is usually filled with flowers, breakfasts, and messages for those who have given life...
But what about women who give birth in other ways?
With those of us who don't have children, by choice or by circumstance, but who still love, care for, and protect with the same intensity.
At EPIC Pets, this year we want to talk about them. About us. About you.
We want to talk about another way of mothering.
Because although the world often insists on defining motherhood in just one way—biological, traditional, human—we know that there are many more.
Some women chose not to be mothers. Others couldn't, even though they deeply desired to be. And many more have channeled that immense love into other forms of life: into their pets, their communities, their dreams.
Mothering is also caring without measure.
Mothering isn't just giving birth. It's delivering. It's holding.
It's caring about another person's well-being, being present, building routines, and providing them with security and unconditional love.
This often happens with people who aren't your blood. Sometimes, that love has four legs and follows you around the house.
We say this from the experience of thousands of women who find meaning in their bond with their dogs or cats, and who have created bonds that are just as real, just as deep, even though they are not socially recognized as mothers.
We also say this for women who are biological mothers, and who also see their pets as part of their family. Because one thing doesn't exclude the other.
This idea is neither new nor isolated. All over the world, women are raising their voices to make these realities visible:
-
In the United States, movements like #ChildfreeByChoice and the popular Dog Mom figure proudly assert love for animals as a legitimate form of emotional motherhood.
-
In the United Kingdom, groups like Gateway Women support childless women through a loving, community-based, and symbolic approach.
-
In Germany and Japan, communities of women who choose not to become human mothers are growing, but who find in their pets an equally meaningful relationship of care and belonging.
-
In Latin America, projects like #NoSoyMadrePero give voice to stories of grief, healing, and new ways of mothering.
Without comparisons, with deep respect.
We don't want—nor do we intend—to compare the love and responsibility that comes with having and raising a human child. We know it's an immense role, full of challenges and a dedication we deeply admire.
Our intention is not to equate motherhood, but to broaden its meaning.
We want to open a space where love is also valued, even if it doesn't come from the womb. A space where caring and connecting with another being are enough to deserve recognition.
Because Mother's Day shouldn't be exclusive, but expansive. Because caring is also loving. And loving is also mothering.
This Mother's Day, celebrate your bond.
If you ever felt like Mother's Day wasn't for you, today we want to tell you: it is.
Because you also care.
You also hold.
You also love with all your heart.
And that, in essence, is mothering.
